Motvind Records present a wonderful duo album by American (but Scandinavia based) string virtuosos Katt Hernandez and John Andrew Wilhite-Hannisdal. They are improvising on the idea of a music that could have been, or could yet come to life. Or just is. The close and curious interplay follows a logic that always lets the listener be a part of this «potential» folk music. From the faintest sounds, where they're barely breathing on the strings, all the way to music that makes us get up and dance, the record holds an intensity that is at once dramatic and elegant. The titles come both from historic and fictive places, fitting into an alternative map, or as the title suggests - “example” landscapes, possible cartographies.

Beautiful music for our challenging times. Unique voices like Mitchell and Harris provide what little hope is possible. I love how, in their unique way, they incorporate, along with so much else, the spirit of Sun Ra, one of my primary musical heros. And it’s interesting that I used to argue that there were places that the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) could go that the western flute couldn’t. But after hearing Nicole Mitchell’s work on this recording I’m a little less confident abo kyoung21b
